My best friend has a tail, shaggy fur and terrible breath, so our travel choices tend to be made according to the quality and quantity of pet friendly amenities and off-leash green spaces. Revelstoke was so welcoming to the two of us a handful of years ago that we now call it home. Here is my pet friendly guide to Revelstoke, including places to stay, eat, walk, shop, and more.
Best Pet Friendly Place To Stay: The Cube Hotel
Location: 311 Campbell Ave
Conveniently located, clean and affordable, this is one of the newer additions to Revelstoke’s list of pet friendly accommodations. It’s in the heart of downtown, and the Greenbelt, our most popular dog walking destination, is only a couple of blocks away, allowing for easy morning romps and cool swims in the river on hot summer afternoons.
Insider Tip: Pets are subject to approval upon arrival, so make sure your best bud is on their best behaviour.
Best Off-Leash Walking Trail: The Greenbelt
Location: Centennial Park Drive
This paved trail winds its way from Centennial Park all the way to the Illecillewaet Bridge-a good couple of kilometers in each direction. Just off the pavement, a network of smaller trails lead down to the Columbia River. This is where locals tend to let their dogs run off-leash while they ride their bikes, go for a run, or catch-up with friends. It’s a pet owners dream come true!
Insider Tip: Keep a leash handy and expect to run into dogs and humans of all shapes and sizes once you leave the paved trail, especially during evenings and weekends.
Best Pet Friendly Shopping: The Farmers’ Market
Location: Grizzly Plaza, Mackenzie Avenue
Saturday mornings are for fresh coffee in the sun and stocking up on produce, plants and sausages at the weekly farmers’ market. Stroll the pedestrian block of Mackenzie Avenue, grab a snack and a souvenir, and introduce your furry friend to the locals. The market runs from 9:00 am-1:00 pm every Saturday from mid-May through mid-September.
Insider Tip: There are bound to be more kids than adults darting in and out amongst the stalls, so dogs must be kept on a leash and under control at all times.
Best Pet Frinedly Place To Eat: Kawakubo picnic at Waterworld
Location: 109 1 St E
There are no pet-friendly restaurants in Revelstoke, but there are a number of beautiful spots to sit and enjoy a picnic. Sushi makes for a great take-out option because it can survive the quick drive and easy hike to the lookout locals refer to as Waterworld, located exactly 11.9 km (7.4 mi) up Highway 23N. Grab a couple of rolls and keep your eyes peeled for a handmade sign on the lefthand (river) side of the road, then park and follow a short trail to a rocky clearing that overlooks mighty Lake Revelstoke and Mt. Begbie off in the distance. There’s even a fire pit, a picnic table and an impressive handmade bench to make your stay all the more perfect.
Insider Tip: If your pet is particularly adventurous, kept them close at hand and consider tying them up while you eat, as the lookout is situated at the top of a huge cliff and may present a hazard for some animals.
Best SPAW: One Love Dog Grooming
Location: Victoria Road
Trail runs and river swims are great until your dirty, wet pooch has to sit in the back of your station wagon with you all the way home. Treat your entire entourage to the gift of a clean pup with a trip to One Love. They groom all manner of dogs, usually in only a few hours, and they are mobile, so if you can’t get yourselves to their usual parking spot on Victoria Rd, they’ll come to you!
Insider Tip: Book a few days in advance, as summer hours may vary.
