Join our Instagrammer of the week, @rachabees, as she takes us on a road trip along BC’s scenic Crowsnest Highway to the Kootenays for a Doukhobor music festival!
One of the many orchards along the road through Keremeos, known as the “Fruit Stand Capital of Canada”.
Doukhobor girls wearing platki (scarves). Doukhobors are a Russian pacifist sect who settled in BC around the turn of the last century. They have a vast catalogue of original music, sung at communal gatherings, church, weddings, funerals and whenever a guitar and camp fire come together. The 67th annual USCC Union of Youth Festival in Castlegar brought together choirs from the Kootenays and as far west as Vancouver Island.
Originally from the interior, Rachel has lived on the west coast for more than ten years. Her favourite place in British Columbia is a tie between Beacon Hill Park in Victoria and a little cabin on a small lake in the Cariboo but she’ll never say no to the beach in Vancouver either.
