Ladner, one of the three communities that make up Delta, BC, offers that feeling you didn’t know you’d been missing in an urban area, only a short drive from downtown Vancouver – it’s like stepping into the friendly 1950s. And while that feeling might be a touch TOO laid back for us to sign up for on a permanent basis (we love our Gastown loft!), the Ladner Village Market offers the perfect reason to visit this sun-warmed burg, two Sundays per month.
The market plan forks like the branches of a tree from Elliot Street in the center of Ladner Village. We like to start at the base of that ‘trunk’, pick up a bowl of chili from the Chili Tank – because how could you possibly pass up eating food served from a refurbished 1943 Czechoslovakian Army soup kitchen– and then wander the market snack-in-hand to see what else we might need to pick up. Be sure to stop at the center stage where the market forks into its two main branches and enjoy the live musicians, and maybe even a dance or two!
With over 150 vendors, there is something for everyone at this market – from fresh produce & flowers, wild fish & local, organic meat, small batch coffee, Untamed Feast‘s dried mushrooms gathered from BC wilderness areas, handmade soaps & cosmetics, pottery, art, potted plants, artisan-made furniture and of course the food vendors! The market is kid & dog friendly, with face painters, balloon animal-makers and the amazing “Give a Giggle” puppets that always entrance little faces – my niece LOVES hers.
So fill your (reusable!) shopping bag with local BC products, choose a bundle of fresh flowers for your table, realize it IS always sunnier in Ladner, and head home with your treasures and a full tummy after a wonderful summer market day.
