World Champion Telemark Program at Silver Star
Silver Star Mountain Resort is one of the few Canadian ski resorts that provide a high level of support to Telemark skiers. The resort partnered with the non-profit organization BC Telemark Ski three years ago, to design and introduce a program that caters to Telemark skiers of all levels and ages. Nordic Manager at Silver Star, Guy Paulsen, and Director of Snowsports, Norman Kreutz, continue to organize and deliver Telemark programs throughout B.C. The most popular is ‘Let’s Tele’, which offers three blocks of teaching sessions with an instructor.
The diversity of terrain
What’s so great about Telemarking at Silver Star is the diversity of terrain – it appeals to skiers of all abilities. If you want a challenge, there are moguls to tackle or fresh powder to glide over. There’s firm snow on the groomed runs, which is ideal for racers seeking high speed.
The Spring Loaded Festival
Silver Star Mountain Resort and the Spring Loaded Telemark Festival will host the third annual National Telemark Championships on the weekend of April 4-6, 2014. Families will have the opportunity to engage in a series of clinics, demonstrations and events. The race categories of Recreational, Junior and Masters encourage all ages and abilities to get involved in the fun and supportive spirit of Telemark.
Tobias Mueller – World Champion of Telemark
Silver Star is commonly used as a training ground for high level winter athletes preparing for World Cup or Olympic events.
There was a celebrity at Silver Star last week – The triple world Telemark champion, Tobias Mueller, from Germany. He chose Silver Star as his training ground during final preparations for the Colorado World Cup race. Tobias Mueller arrived at the resort from Germany on February 3rd and spent the week enjoying ideal Telemark training conditions at Silver Star. Mueller has trained all over the world but this was his first visit to Canada and he has been on the slopes everyday since he arrived and he claimed that conditions were ‘perfect’ and that the resort lived up to its reputation of consistently providing firm snow and great visibility.
Shane Landreville, the current Canadian Men’s National Telemark Champion and good friend of Mueller, began training full-time at Silver Star from the beginning of the year, along with two other members of the Canadian National Team. Landreville was excited to host Mueller at his home mountain, after living and training with Mueller in Germany last year. Landreville loves the diversity of terrain at the resort and the sense of comaraderie and community that he claims other resorts can’t match.
Keep your eyes peeled for these world class athletes on the mountain!
