We’re asked many questions on our social media channels, but one that we hear again and again is: “who won your latest contest?” So, starting now, we’ve decided to feature the winners of our ongoing contests in a series called “Winner’s Report”!
Meet Dennis Parker from Chilliwack, British Columbia: he was the winner of our 2012-13 Ski It To Believe It Contest, where we gave one lucky entrant the chance to win a dream ski vacation to any of BC’s 13 ski resorts. Dennis chose Whistler Blackcomb, and brought his wife, son and daughter-in-law along with him on the trip earlier this season. We asked Dennis a few questions about the family’s experience there:
1. Have you ever been to Whistler before?
Linda (my wife) and I made our first trip to Whistler as a honeymoon destination, some 37 years ago. At that period of time Whistler was in its infancy as a winter ski resort, a far cry from today as it now enjoys international recognition as both a summer and winter destination. Although Linda and I continued to ski, our family commitments meant we could only patronize local mountains and as such, it was only many years later that we were able to return to the Whistler area. It was approximately 10 years ago we again travelled to Whistler and since, have enjoyed the resort both in the winter and summer months. I have also travelled to Whistler on three occasions for tournaments with my hockey buddies, along with biking the area a couple of times. Whistler is a venue both Linda and I thoroughly enjoy and we were ecstatic when I won this contest and could choose Whistler as our prize destination. Our son David and his new wife, Nicola, have also experienced Whistler in the past and both tell of the exciting times while visiting the area.
2. Describe your best experience during your trip to Whistler.
The reason we picked Whistler as our destination was for the skiing experience and we were not disappointed. Despite a lack of snow the runs were very well groomed and we found many runs that satisfied our various levels of skiing ability. The Fresh Tracks breakfast was great as were able to have a delicious meal and then experience the runs with freshly groomed snow and minimal traffic.
3. What was your favourite attraction?
It is difficult to choose one attraction as they were each so unique. Each event was well organized and lived up to the expectations of all of our family. On the snowmobiling tour we were lucky to ascend the trails during the first snowfall in many days. On arrival at Crystal Hut we were greeted by friendly staff, good wine and unique food presentation. A local guitarist capped off the evening. The fine dining experience had an exceptional host in Marie who shared her vast knowledge of the dining options in Whistler. The restaurants that we visited prepared various courses and all were very delicious paired with the various wines. The Scandinave Spa was a welcome retreat after four days of skiing. The setting was pristine and the various pools and relaxation rooms provided much needed relief. As for the massage treatment, our family unanimously agreed ” It was the best massage ever”.
4. Did you have an unexpected moment?
Never did we expect to be sitting at an outdoor barbeque, enjoying a delicious cheeseburger and beer at the top of the mountain in January. The weather was sunny and mild and the atmosphere, perfect.
5. How did your trip compare to what you had expected?
Our expectations were high as we were well aware of the reputation Whistler has as a top rated world resort. Our trip only served to confirm this as the scenery, hotel accommodations, village atmosphere, stores, restaurants and the various activities were first class. And yes, the ski hills were the focal point and are meticulously maintained and offer such a variety of runs. The restaurants located throughout the Blackcomb and Whistler mountains each had their own specialty and made the mountain experience even more special.
6. Would you come back again and what would you do?
Once again, the opinion was unanimous, without a doubt we will all be back, if not this winter, for sure over the summer to take advantage of the many activities during that season. We are looking forward to biking throughout the surrounding area and to try some mountain biking. Several friends and I are contemplating a trip to play a couple of Whistlers great golf courses. Linda would like to return with several girlfriends to experience the Scandinave Spa. Shopping within the Village is also an activity on the list.
