Travel media relations is an essential marketing channel to tell our brand story, build awareness, and encourage travellers to visit BC. Here are a few things Destination BC has been working on in the travel media relations arena over the last couple of months.

New York Media Event

In September, we cohosted a BC themed lunch with Destination Canada for Conde Nast editors, including GQ, Self, Conde Nast Traveller, and Bon Appetit. Our goal was to bring the BC Effect to New York, using storytelling and videos to bring our beautiful province to life. Our lunch featured delicious food, prepared in the Bon Appetit test kitchen by Chef Nick Nutting of Tofino’s Wolf and Fog. The Oliver Osoyoos Winery Association also provided our guests with a selection of wines from the region. In addition to our lunch event, we also joined Destination Canada at desk side meetings with some of New York’s top media.

Travel Classics

In the lead-up to September it was all hands on deck for Travel Classics. We partnered with Tourism Whistler to host this prestigious media marketplace attended by some of North America’s top freelance writers and editors. A few of the highlights included:

  • Over 80 of our tier 1 media accounts attended the event, many who had never been to BC before.
  • In addition to the conference, we hosted over 30 pre and post conference press trips (ensuring future editorial coverage across BC).
  • Very positive feedback from media, many who even said it was the best Travel Classics conference they had ever been to!

Hosting this conference will generate media coverage for the next several years, and it has already resulted in stories in the NY Times and Chicago Tribune.

In addition to these events, and many more, here are just a few of the media outlets Destination BC recently assisted or hosted: Departures, Travel + Leisure, USA Today, Global BC, City Line, WestJet Magazine, Food & Wine, Sunset Magazine, BC Magazine, AAA Journeys Magazine, Monocle, Outside Online, Matador.
